If you like the board and you like the idea of a mall survival game, you should buy this item. It is good and is becoming harder to find and you'll really enjoy it. While buying some extras for my gameplaying fun I saw Mall of Horror and decided to try it out because it had a bit of complexity and showcased a wide array of things that could be done. It was on of the better pick-ups I've had in the last few years. Like many people I need newer things from my board games because I feel like games omit potential players by being too predictable. Mall of Horror got aroudn this by picking up an idea and pulling it through the grinder; it took the idea of living and put it in the middle of an ocean of rules to make it situate better. The first time through was a rough run because of this, but the second was a good time and the third, with other players, started getting interesting. I discovered that I had found not only a game that was not only interesting and unique but was also different from a lot of things released in the genre. Instead of gaming to kill zombies you are playing to survive an onslaught and, instead of trying to get out alone, you are trying to get out in a variety of ways. You control more, do more, and have to navigate more without it seeming awkward. I like that because it acknowledges the fact that the undead are not something you can dismiss and because you have to really think about living.
One of the things that the game has going for it is that it is complex: you can get confused when you start but, later, you can thank the game for making itself a good game that can be played several time. You control more than one character when playing, three in a normal game and more in a bigger setting, and the number increases as the number of players increases. The people can all do different things as well (sort of like a speial move), and they score points differently for the player. The Pin-Up girl has the highest point set-up, the tough guy the next, and the little girl the least. The end comes when "x" amount of people remain or when you get everyone into a specific area - there are 6 areas, with a generic "Parking Lot" that does not allow victory. There is also the idea of voting that comes into play, the things you do impact your point totals in several different ways, and the game uses cards that include things like weaponry and ideas like "security camera" where you get to know the number of enemies involved. Since you have voting there is also room for notions like diplomacy, for strategy, and for a montage of ideas to come into play. This is really unique because, in game slike this, talking to your opponents is RARELY used.
Normally I wouldn't go into so much detail about a game's directions but the editorial makes it sound too low-key when it is anything but. There are better reviews of the game online if you want an in-depth idea of exactly what lay entails, how scoring is done, and so on. Regardless, this is a game that is worth getting and then some because the game is so much better than anything I've played in a while. I highly recommend it, wanting people to look at what they are getting and how good the caliber of the gameplay is.
I wish I could say more and have to point out that this is a synopsis at best and does justice here and there - look it up if you want BUT buy it if the premise seems interesting because it is of unique caliber and beautifully rendered. Recommended and then some.
