As a low-cost alternative to a metal professional-grade mandoline, this versatile tool will appeal to novice cooks bent on creating uniform fruit and vegetable slices for salads, pies, tarts, and garnishes. Snap four different plates in and out of the tool to quickly produce thin (but not paper-thin), medium, and thick slices; grate coarsely or finely; julienne; and make shoestring-size french fries. A round guard grips foods while protecting your fingers as you push foods over cutting or grating edges. A handle on one end and nonskid "feet" on the other provide countertop stability.
